Scottish Branch Annual General Meeting
This is the Scottish Branch AGM meeting notice. The main order of business at the AGM will be the confirmation/election of committee members. The committee comprises one Chair and up to nine members. Furthermore, three additional members can be co-opted for specific roles (see Summary of Roles at the end of this notice).

At present, six committee members are reaching the end of their three-year term and are up for re-election, including the Chair (Anne Budd). At present, two members are stepping down, whilst four wish to continue, including Anne Budd who has offered to stand for re-election for a further 3 years as Chair. One co-opted member has also offered to move to a full committee member position (to be confirmed at AGM). Therefore, this leaves one full committee member position open, as well as three co-opted places, one of which needs to be an early careers member. If you are interested to become a member or co-opted member of the IOA Scottish Branch Committee, please e-mail Anne Budd (anne@newacoustics.co.uk) by Friday 19 April, with a brief summary of your experience and what contribution you feel you could make. Only Scottish Branch Members can apply for such positions.

Estimating BS 4142 Character Corrections at the Planning Stage
Presentation by Matt Torjussen

BS 4142 provides subjective and objective methods for determining graded corrections to the specific sound level for impulsivity and tonality; however, these require specific sound sources to be installed and operating.  In planning applications where the sources are proposed, or the propagation path is intended to change significantly, only the professional judgement of the acoustics practitioner can be relied upon to determine the likely prominence/audibility of these features at a remote assessment location. To address this gap, simplified auralisation (‘auralisation-lite’) has been used to estimate the character corrections using the calculation method from ISO 9613-2.

In this talk, the problem being addressed will be highlighted, the process of auralisation-lite will be described, the results of experiments testing the method will be presented, and an interactive test will be used to highlight the importance of objective methods.

Matt Torjussen is the Acoustics Lead at ANV Measurement Systems. He is a graduate of the ISVR in Southampton, a Chartered Engineer, and a member of the Institute of Acoustics. Matt has experience in consultancy, product design, and instrumentation.

His research interests include understanding the acoustic features in environmental noise and their effects on human perception, as well as the creation of tools for measuring, evaluating, and assessing them.

Arup, 7th Floor, 1 W Regent St, Glasgow G2 1RW

Attendees should be aware that the office is in the Glasgow City Low Emission Zone (LEZ) and that there are therefore charges for certain vehicles (for practical purposes, it is generally the case that diesel engine vehicles registered after September 2015, and petrol vehicles registered from 2006 onwards will meet the required LEZ standards). The closest multi-storey carpark is the NCP at 81 Mitchell St, Glasgow G1 3LN. On-street parking is available in the surrounding area but is limited and may require the Ringo App to pay. The office is a 5 minutes’ walk from both Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street and is close to many bus stops.

If you have any queries about this meeting, please contact Laurent Galbrun (Heriot-Watt University) L.G.U.Galbrun@hw.ac.uk.
