There has been interest in the possible effects of environmental noise on human health for many years. Indeed the first main chapter, Chapter II of the Wilson Report *, published 50 years ago, summarises “The General Effects of Noise” and covers Annoyance, Sleep Disturbance, Mental health, etc. But over the last 5 or 10 years evidence has accumulated on possible associations between environmental noise and more severe effects such as cardiovascular disease, including myocardial infarction [heart attacks], hypertension, strokes etc. New and future noise sources, e.g. HS2, are also presenting new challenges.
This presentation will introduce some of the basic concepts and theoretical “models” used to try to understand the links between the various non-auditory effects of noise, and explain current thinking on the “strength of evidence” for the various effects.
It will go on to cover the topic of Exposure-Response relationships for effects such as Annoyance, Sleep disturbance, Cognitive effects on children and Cardiovascular disease. The process by which research on Noise and Health finds its way into “official guidance” from organisations such as the WHO and the European Environment Agency will be explained. Techniques for putting monetary values on health impacts will be outlined.
The presentation will conclude with some thoughts on possible future developments, including the updating of the current WHO Guidelines on Community Noise, published over 10 years ago in 2000.
