Award winning Cavendish Pianos, based in Yorkshire are one of the few remaining piano makers in Britain. This craftsmanship-based manufacturer mostly rely on home-grown products and a series of small businesses each with their own speciality. British oak, ash and walnut is used for components and cabinets. British felt and cloths are widely regarded as the worlds’ finest. String-makers still exist who have learned the specialised skill of hand winding piano strings. A high grade hammer and British made strings and design give Cavendish Pianos their distinctive classic, European tone. The firm also has links to Lincoln College, which is one of few facilities in the UK to teach piano technology, and it has provided employment to graduates of the college.
Leeds couple Adam Cox and his wife Charlie founded Cavendish Pianos in 2012. Adam was trained as a piano technician and has been working in the piano trade for more than 20 years. The Coxes are, passionate piano players as are their three daughters.
During this visit Adam will give a presentation on the piano craftsmanship at Cavendish Pianos, particularly revealing aspects of their unique and distinctive sounds. There will also be an opportunity to see the workshop and the craftsmen work.
