Yorkshire and North East Branch Regional Meeting
BS 4142: 2014  How do the results of the Objective & Reference Methods for Tonal & Impulsive Noise compare to your Professional Opinion?
Mike Breslin, Director, ANV Measurement Systems
Tuesday 27 June 2017: 6pm for 6.30pm start
University of Sheffield, Workroom G04 in the Diamond Building, Leavygreave Road, Sheffield S3 7RD

BS 4142: 2014 advises that certain acoustic features can increase the significance of impact of a sound and that where such features are present a character correction should be added to the Specific Sound to obtain the Rating Level. The Standard advises that this can be approached in three ways:

a) Subjective Method

b) Objective Method for Tonality and

c) Reference Method.

A number of commercial sounds have been recorded and these will be presented to the audience who will be asked to submit their subjective assessments of tonality and impulsiveness in accordance with Section 9.2 of BS 4142: 2014.

The Subjective, Objective and Reference Methods will be explained during the course of the meeting. However, being familiar with Section 9.2 of the Standard (which explains the Subjective Method) prior to the meeting is highly recommended.

The results of the Subjective Assessments for each sound will be compared to the results of the Objective and Reference Methods. The comparison will be done statistically and the presenter will not be making individuals’ assessments public.

No need to book. Everyone welcome, but for catering purposes it would be helpful if you could confirm your attendance by sending an email to k.horoshenkov@sheffield.ac.uk at least a week before the meeting.  CPD certificates will be provided.

A selection of refreshments will be provided. The map of the campus can be found on this link below (building 199 in G3) and the directions to the Diamond can also be found at
